How do I choose between a BrailleNote BT
and a BrailleNote QT?
It depends on what feels most comfortable for you when you type. We
have found that users who learnt to read and write Braille when they
were young often feel more at home with a BT, whereas those who learnt
at a later time are often more at home with a QT keyboard. The
BrailleNote has the same functionality no matter which keyboard type
you choose, so it is simply a question of what keyboard works best for
you.

Would an 18 or 32 cell Braille display be
better for me?
Well, the more Braille the better, right? So, the 32 cell option is
always going to appeal more than the 18. However for economic reasons,
the 18 cell has its own appeal, and allows users for whom a 32 is too
great an outlay to have access to refreshable Braille. The great thing
about the BrailleNote is that it is possible to upgrade the 18 cell
model to a 32 at any time, so whichever model you choose, the options
are always open.

What are the advantages of a
BrailleNote over a laptop?
Here are just a few of the advantages of owning a BrailleNote over
a laptop:
- True portability- the BrailleNote is half the size and weighs
about half as much as even the most compact laptop, making it
truly portable, and comes in a carry case designed so you can
access it anywhere from an armchair to the bus stop.
- Instant on/off - no boot up time.
- Braille input - with a BrailleNote you can input in Braille as
well as read it, all in one unit. With a laptop, you have no input
choice, and a Braille display is one more thing to lug around.
- Battery time - 20 hours of battery life vs 2. Say no more!
- User interface - the BrailleNote software, KeySoft, was designed
specifically for people who are blind, so it is intuitive and user
friendly. With a screen reader, you are always compromising
between a visual user interface and speech or separate Braille
display output.
We think of it this way - if you were left handed, would you rather
have a left-handed can opener, or a right-handed can opener with a
left hand adapter? It's that simple.

How quickly will the BrailleNote go out
of date?
Never. Our Research and Development team are continually evaluating
the best of the latest technology, and utilizing it to the fullest
extent possible. We value our existing customers as well as our new
customers, and will continue to offer software and hardware upgrades
so that all BrailleNote users benefit from the technology.

How durable are the BrailleNote and
VoiceNote products?
We had a BrailleNote customer in the US drop his unit 4 times (once
off the back of his friend's pick-up truck!); and the unit still
worked after all that. Obviously this type of abuse is not advised for
every unit. However the BrailleNote was designed to go where you go,
unless you are going swimming or diving, that is!
^BrailleNote Questions
How old should a child be before
introducing them to a BrailleNote?
The BrailleNote is a literacy tool that can support a child in
learning to read and write Braille, and as the child expands their
knowledge and understanding, the BrailleNote will be an invaluable
tool in their increasing independence and learning. The optimum time
seems to be when a child has learned the fundamental aspects of
Braille, usually around 8 years old.

I'm a teacher and I have a blind student
who wants to access computers and is planning to attend college. How
would a BrailleNote assist him/her?
The BrailleNote is designed to interact with mainstream PC
technology. Some of the features that will assist a college student
are:
- Being able to read or write assignments anywhere, and email them
to their teacher or transfer them to a PC quickly and easily
- File Synchronisation - work on an assignment either at the PC or
on the BrailleNote, and have the latest version synchronise
between them
- Accessing internet via network for speed, and/or phone line for
convenience
- Using the BrailleNote as a Braille terminal for a PC with most
available screen readers
- Sitting an examination without the need for a stranger as a
reader, allowing the student to concentrate on working in a
comfortable and familiar way
- The BrailleNote gives a student the ability to work how they
want, where they want, to manage their time independently, and
fully realize their potential.
